"Is my smile the worst you've seen?" is such a common question, and the answer is always "No". Of most importance to us is that the patient has taken the first and most difficult step in coming to see us so we can discuss all their options. These are some of the patients for whom a change in smile has changed their self-confidence and their life.

Smile Makeover

Treatment: Veneers, BriteSmile, Inman Aligner, Orthodontic

This very nervous lady has been a patient for over 30 years and initially used to have sedation for all her treatment. Gradually she has gained her confidence and she attends regularly for her dental care. We had both become aware that the restorations in her front teeth had become more worn and stained and when it was time to replace them we discussed the option of having dental veneers to improve the overall appearance and remove the filled areas.

After seeing a wax mock-up of her proposed smile she decided that she would prefer veneers rather than re-filling, and we provided porcelain veneers for her four front teeth. Before the treatment she had a BriteSmile tooth whitening to improve their overall colour and she has been provided with dental bleaching trays so she can maintain her new colour.

We have also undertaken cosmetic smoothing to improve the appearance of her lower teeth and she is considering Inman Aligner treatment to re-align her lower teeth, which have relapsed number of years after her orthodontic treatment.

Treatment: BriteSmile, Veneers, Crowns

We had been treating the son of this lady so were delighted when she asked to join us as our patient. She was concerned that the crowns on her front teeth were looking particularly noticeable and she did not like her smile. In addition to the ageing crowns on her front teeth her side teeth were very heavily filled and the gum levels on the smile teeth did not match. She also had some old restorations that had stained and become more noticeable.

Our treatment consisted of her initially having a BriteSmile tooth whitening procedure in order to improve the overall colour of her teeth. We then planned her treatment using a wax-up of her proposed smile, providing porcelain veneers to her front side teeth and replacing her old crowns with the new, all-porcelain ones. Using the dental laser we were able to shape the gum margins and we replaced stained restorations with ones that blended in.

The result is an even smile that has also supported her lips and made them appear fuller so she does not show as much gum above her teeth when she smiles.

Patient : C.T.

Treatment: 4 Veneers

This man was embarking on a career of being a male model but had been criticised about his teeth, especially one of his front teeth that was sticking out. When we assessed his smile he had a few front teeth that were also out of alignment. The best appearance was when treatment was provided for his four front teeth, and on seeing the results on the wax model the patient was happy to proceed. He was delighted with his new smile and said it was what he had always wanted.

Patient : D.H.

Treatment: BriteSmile, 4 veneers

David had been nervous of dental treatment and his confidence was restored over visits to restore his mouth. Eventually he asked about treatment for his front upper teeth as he had chipped them and did not like their appearance. A BriteSmile whitening was carried out initially and then four veneers were provide for his upper front teeth. He has a difficult bite and care had to be taken to improve the appearance but still allow free movement.

Patient : J.C.

Treatment: BriteSmile, ceramic crown, 3 veneers

This patient was unhappy with the length of his upper front teeth and the gap between them and wished to have white teeth. We started with a BriteSmile tooth whitening and then later provided a ceramic crown and three veneers for his front four teeth. He is now wanting treatment for his lower teeth.

Patient : J.C.

Treatment: 4 veneers upper front teeth

The patient had not wanted braces as a child and his front tooth was sticking out into his lip. He wanted a natural appearance so the colour chosen reflected his natural tooth colour. 4 porcelain veneers were fitted to bring the teeth back into line and he is delighted with the final result.

Patient : M.F.

Treatment: 2 ceramic crown, 2 veneers

This lady had been provided with crowns for her two upper front teeth by a previous dentist. She had been unhappy with the appearance and felt that they were too bulky so were protrusive and stuck into her lip. In order to balance the appearance of her four front teeth we provided veneers to the side teeth at the same time as replacing the crowns with ceramic ones.

Patient : P.A.

Treatment: BriteSmile, ceramic crown, 3 veneers

Despite being married to a photographer this patient was reluctant to have her photograph taken as she hated her smile. She particularly disliked the unsightly crown that she had for over 20 years.

The treatment we provided was BriteSmile whitening to improve the colour of all her teeth and then a new crown made from the new ceramic material and veneers on her other front teeth.

Patient : S.P.

Treatment: BriteSmile then 4 veneers

This patient had always had a gap between her upper front teeth and had been relatively unconcerned about it. However, during a visit with the hygienist she enquired if an improvement might be possible. After ensuring the health of her gums a wax-up was made of how the teeth could be adjusted and improved. She was initially unsure whether to continue with a small gap so her temporary veneers were made without a gap to allow her to experience the new look before her permanent veneers were completed. However after a day without the gap she rang the practice to ask that her permanent veneers were not made with a gap as she much preferred this appearance.

Treatment: Implants, crowns, bridges

This patient had seen many dentists over the years but returned complaining that her teeth appeared to be moving, her gums were always bleeding and she was getting swellings above some teeth. One of her front teeth was sticking forward, and initially she was given the options of treatment with braces to align it, however she preferred other alternatives. In addition she had recently become engaged and wanted a better smile before her wedding, although the date had not yet been set.

Her treatment involved root fillings for infected teeth, implants, crowns and bridges. It was carried out over a number of different stages over the course of three years, with some teeth being in temporary restorations whilst healing occurred. She had home whitening for her lower teeth in order to brighten their colour.

Patient : C.R.

Treatment: Crowns and veneers

This patient was concerned about the broken front tooth that was getting sensitive. He had been watching TV programmes about “smile makeovers” and wondered if it would be an option for him. He did not like his smile or the silver fillings that were showing.

His new smile was planned using a wax up of what cold be achieved so the patient could visualise the end result. After his gum condition has returned to health and an infection had been treated with a root treatment we provided a mixture pf veneers and porcelain crowns for nine teeth in order to get the best result. The patient is now interested in having treatment to improve his lower teeth.

Patient : H.E.

Treatment: Crowns for upper and lower teeth + part dentures

This patient had been unable to attend a dentist for a few years because of the pressure of work and had become embarrassed about her smile. She had a number of missing teeth that had been replaced with a denture that was no longer fitting well. She had a number of broken teeth as she had developed a habit of clenching and grinding her teeth. She would prefer to save her teeth.

Once her gum condition had stabilised and teeth with infections had been root filled, then we provided crowns to restore the height, shape and colour of her teeth. Initial partial dentures were provided and the patient is considering having implants in the future.

Patient : I.S.

Treatment: Porcelain crowns and bridges for upper teeth

This patient is very nervous of treatment, but was embarrassed by her smile especially at social functions. She had a number of old crowns that were obviously deteriorating. To improve her smile we provided new all-porcelain crowns and bridges and she chose a whiter colour than before. She was encouraged with her progress and did not feel that she needed sedation for the treatment. Eventually she is planning treatment for her lower teeth.

Patient : J.R.

Treatment: Crowns and veneers for her upper teeth

This patient was referred by her husband as he knew she was unhappy with her smile. She was particularly concerned about the dark line around her existing crowns and that her teeth looked “fangy” and wondered what could be done to improve her smile. Treatment involved reshaping the teeth into a more even smile and reducing the amount of tooth that was showing. Using veneers and replacement crowns the teeth were given a better shape. The effect was to improve the height of her face, which quickly improved her skin and her eyes and gave her such a better appearance. She had a home whitening treatment for her lower teeth to give them a brighter colour. She says she wished she had had the treatment years ago.

Patient : M.S.

Treatment: Crowns, bridges, veneers, dental plates

This lady had the cataracts removed in her eyes and then was shocked when seeing herself in the mirror at how unsightly her teeth had become. She wanted a cosmetic improvement, but one that still looked natural for her age (80’s). She had dentures that had worn down and she had lost one in a restaurant in London.

The treatment was carried out in stages, starting with the upper teeth, so she could see an immediate improvement, and felt confident to look in the mirror again.

Patient : M.T.

Treatment: veneers for 8 upper front teeth

This patient’s existing veneers had started to chip and discolour and she asked if she might have them replaced. Working as a dental nurse she felt embarrassed that her teeth were not as good as they could be.

To improve her smile, veneers were provided for her eight smile teeth. She wanted whiter teeth and chose a white shade, which looked stunning against her sun-tanned skin.

Patient : S.G.

Treatment: Porcelain bridges and veneers

This lady was referred to our practice from her regular dentist. She had always had weak teeth and some remaining deciduous teeth. She had been referred to the Manchester Dental Hospital in the past but it was not until she came to us was she able to achieve the smile she had always wanted.

We discussed that her remaining teeth would need removing and after considering her options she decided she would rather have bridges than implants. As two of her permanent teeth had drifted into an incorrect position they needed to be reshaped. After so many years of being embarrassed with her smile the patient was delighted with the result that was achieved in just three months

Patient : S.G.

Treatment: BriteSmile whitening, veneers, bridges

This lady was very embarrassed about her smile, particularly since her front tooth had discoloured since having a root filling. However she was also very nervous and this had made her postpone seeking advice and treatment in the past. We offered her the option of having sedation to help with the treatment; however we carried out treatment in small stages, which allowed the patient to build her confidence and did not feel she needed sedation.

Initially we concentrated on her front teeth, giving her the appearance she wanted. She had a “baby” tooth remaining on either side, which had needed removing and then time to heal. Once they had healed we then provided bridges to close the gaps and complete her smile. We managed to get her smiling in time for an “important” birthday and she reported that her friends had remarked how much happier she had seemed recently (possibly because she felt confident to smile properly)

Patient : S.H.

Treatment: Porcelain crowns and bridges

This patient had wished an improvement to her smile as she had an unsightly upper bridge that did not match her other teeth. Treatment involved replacing the old bridge and veneers to other front teeth so that her smile was brightened and more even.

Patient : S.B.

Treatment: Enlighten whitening

This patient had suffered from tetracycline staining so her teeth were dark and banded. She had tried a whitening procedure in the past. We discussed that she may need veneers to cover over the natural colour in her teeth, however I suggested that she have whitening first as without it the veneers may need to be dense to cover the colour.

We chose the Enlighten two stage technique, as it is the most effective in such cases. The patient was so delighted after the whitening that she no longer feels the need to have the veneers as her smile is so improved.

Treatment: Ceramic crowns for five anterior teeth

This lady had two unsightly crowns on her front teeth, but also a remaining “baby” tooth that had needed fillings over the years and was quite weak. She was embarrassed about her smile. To make an improvement we provided new all-porcelain crowns for her front teeth, including the “baby” tooth, so her smile was more even. She has always been very nervous of dental treatment in the past, which is why she had left treatment for so long, but despite being offered sedation she was comfortable having the treatment just watching a video.

Patient : Mr Allen’s

Treatment: crown

Mr Allen’s treatment consisted of hygiene treatment to remove the staining caused by regular use of Corsodyl mouthrinse. He also needed a few restorations involving fillings and an all-porcelain crown. He can now have his wedding photographs redone and smile fully!

Fillings & DenturesTop

Patient : D.B.

Treatment: Fillings and flexible dentures

This patient had been fighting cancer and had multiple chemotherapy treatments and had recently lost her husband. She was wearing dentures that had been fitted immediately after teeth were removed, and they were no longer fitting and had broken repeatedly. She was very bothered about the appearance of her other teeth as they looked as thought hey had gum recession. Her treatment involved providing hygienist gum therapy then tooth coloured restorations at the gum margins, then flexible upper and lower partial dentures to fit around the other teeth.

Patient : S.B.

Treatment: Replacement fillings in front teeth

A number of years earlier the patient had had a consultation to discuss her smile and was wishing a smile makeover of her upper teeth. However a change in circumstances meant that the patient had to postpone this treatment. She returned as one of her front teeth had gone black and she was having nightmares about losing it, however as she was still at college and was unable to afford the smile makeover. To improve her appearance we provided replacement fillings where the decay was showing and built up her front teeth to disguise their irregularity. This has greatly improved her appearance until she is in a position to have further treatment.

Patient : H.P.

Treatment: Upper and lower dentures

This lady was interested in the Oralift Appliances in order to improve her facial appearance. Unfortunately a pre-requirement is that a patient needs lower back teeth in order to support the appliances. She had not been to a dentist for many years and her upper dental plate was quite worn and no longer supporting her lips. A new plate has automatically given her face fullness and a lower plate is enabling her to wear the oralift.

Treatment: Invisalign for upper and lower arches

Jessica had been offered orthodontic treatment as a child in order to straighten her teeth but had declined. She was now starting work in the beauty industry and wanted her tooth to look nice, but did not wish to have a fixed brace as it might interfere with some of the procedures she was providing at work. Her main concern was the position of her upper canine teeth and in order to make room for their alignment she needed the removal of two side teeth. To get the best final result we also provided treatment for her lower teeth. In view of the number of teeth needing realigning the treatment took eighteen months and at the end of the treatment we arranged that she could use her retaining aligners as whitening trays so that she could also improve the colour of her teeth.

Patient : S.H.

Treatment: Invisalign to align upper teeth

Sarah had undergone orthodontic treatment as a child for her upper teeth but at the time had declined treatment for the lower ones. She was aware of how irregular her lower teeth were and that her upper teeth had drifted out of line a little. After discussing her case we decided to remove one lower front tooth and use this space to move her other lower teeth into a better position. We also provided treatment for the upper teeth to ensure that she was very happy with the end result. The treatment took just 15 months.

Patient : T.B.

Treatment: Invisalign to align upper teeth

This lady had had orthodontic treatment as a teenager, but her upper front tooth had moved forward and she was very conscious of it when she smiled. We embarked on a course on Invisalign treatment to move other upper teeth to allow the protruding tooth to be realigned into the normal arch shape. The treatment took eight months using 18 aligners. At the end of active phase of the treatment cosmetic treatment was provided for her broken lower tooth and to disguise the cavity at the front of her protruding tooth, where her toothbrush had caused damage over the years.

Patient : LG

Treatment: Invisalign

I would like to thank the whole team at Waterside Dental Care for the service and care I received whilst having my teeth straighten using Invisalign. From my initial telephone enquiry through to the final consultation I was treated in a professional friendly manner. Wearing the aligners did not interfere with my daily life making it easy to wear them for the 22 hours a day. I did not have any discomfort and even the tooth extraction was pain free! A real plus point was that people did not know I was wearing the aligners. I now smile with confidence and my only regret is that I did not have the treatment earlier! I would not hesitate to recommend you to others.

Treatment: Botox

Dean was concerned about the deep lines in his forehead and between his eyes and despite his worry about needles, was determined to have treatment to improve his appearance. Muscle-relaxing injections smoothed his forehead but still left some expression. When the lines started to re-appear after about four months he was more than happy to book in again for more of the same as it made him feel better about himself.

Patient : D.A.

Treatment: Chemical Peel, Botox, Tooth whitening

Her daughter’s wedding had made Denise want to look her best and she came to us for advice, as she wanted to look good on the day. To improve her teeth we provided custom made trays for her to carry out a home whitening treatment, which improved the colour by 9 Shades. A chemical peel helped to restore the vitality of her skin and remove some fine lines around her cheeks. Using muscle-relaxing injections we smoothed her frown line, some lines around her eyes and defined her lower jaw by reducing the jowls and so making her face appear thinner.
