Over time tea, coffee, red wine and foodstuffs can discolour teeth so they appear yellower. As more people now keep their natural teeth for life, this yellowing can detract from the beauty of their teeth and has an ageing effect. These days the fashion is for whiter, younger-looking teeth and this can often be achieved using a simple teeth whitening procedure which removes the staining that has been absorbed into the teeth and so restores their previous colour. All teeth respond differently to whitening so it is difficult to accurately predict the end result, but usually an improvement of between five and seven shades can be expected.
At Waterside Dental Care we offer healthy realism about what can be achieved with teeth whitening, along with a choice of options tailored to you personally. You can be reassured that with our dentist being one of the first people in the region to offer teeth whitening and also being a Gold Member of the British Dental Bleaching Society you will receive the best advice and most appropriate teeth whitening treatment.
Any form of whitening involves the application of chemicals onto the surface of the teeth. It is essential that there is a prior assessment that the cause of the discolouration can be corrected with whitening, then that correct chemicals are used and that they are used safely. For this reason it is illegal for anyone other than a trained dentist or dental hygienist to administer teeth whitening procedures and there are many cases of damage to the teeth and mouth from whitening procedures incorrectly used. Some patients experience sensitivity with teeth whitening and help and advice will be given as to how this can be managed.
Still the most cost-effective method involving wearing dental trays with whitening gel either overnight or for a few hours during the day. It involves the construction of custom-made dental trays that fit securely around all the contours of the teeth and are designed to protect the gums from damage from the gel. Demonstrations and written instructions are given as to how much gel to use and the best times to wear the trays to get noticeable results. Long-term supplies of the appropriate whitening gel can be purchased from the practice so the new colour can be maintained.
Once our trained dentist or dental hygienist have protected the soft tissues surrounding the teeth, a special formula of whitening gel is painted onto the exposed tooth surface and a specific light is directed at the teeth to activate the gel. The treatment consists or three or four sessions of 15 minutes carried out consecutively with new gel being used for each session. Patients should allow about 90 minutes for the procedure. This procedure also provides custom-made home trays and gel to use once a month to maintain the improved colour.
